How to use the RustDesk remote control tool in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION?

How to use RustDesk with IDEAL ADMINISTRATION in a Workgroup environment?

I manage a Workgroup network of about fifty machines, mainly running Windows 11. Can I use your IDEAL ADMINISTRATION tool to help me manage my Workgroup? If so, what do I need to set up in order to do so?

1. Can IDEAL ADMINISTRATION be used without an Active Directory domain?

Yes
IDEAL ADMINISTRATION works perfectly in a Workgroup environment, without a domain controller or Active Directory.

However, unlike a domain environment:

  • There is no centralized authentication
  • Administrator accounts must exist locally on each machine
  • Permissions must be consistent across all computers

2. Does RustDesk work in a Workgroup?

Yes. RustDesk does not require any Active Directory domain.

RustDesk can operate:

  • Using public servers (e.g.: rs-ny.rustdesk.com)
  • With a private RustDesk server
  • On a local network (LAN)

3. What are the prerequisites for using IDEAL ADMINISTRATION in a Workgroup?

IDEAL ADMINISTRATION operates agentless and relies on:

  • WMI
  • RPC
  • Administrative shares (ADMIN$, C$)

Required conditions:

  • An identical local administrator account on each computer
  • The same password on all computers (strongly recommended)
  • Firewall allowing:
    • WMI
    • RPC
    • SMB (port 445)
  • WMI service started
  • Proper UAC configuration (disable remote UAC filtering if necessary)

Tip: In a Workgroup environment, account consistency is essential.

4. How to deploy RustDesk via IDEAL ADMINISTRATION in a Workgroup?

The process is identical to a domain environment:

  1. Detect machines by IP address
  2. Remote deployment of RustDesk
  3. Start the RustDesk service
  4. Automatic ID retrieval
  5. Launch remote control session

No additional agent is required.

5. How to prevent the remote user from having to approve the connection?

You must configure a RustDesk permanent password.

This can be done:

  • Manually on each computer
  • Automatically via IDEAL ADMINISTRATION (if automatic configuration has been integrated)

The permanent password allows:

  • Unattended remote access
  • Automated connections
  • Simplified technical support

6. Can RustDesk be used only in LAN mode in a Workgroup?

Yes.

RustDesk automatically detects machines on the same local network.

In this case:

  • No Internet access required
  • Direct peer-to-peer connection
  • Optimal performance

7. Common issues in Workgroup

ProblemLikely causeSolution
Access denied Different admin accounts Standardize local accounts
Slow RPC (20 sec) No DNS resolution Use IP instead of hostname
Deployment fails Remote UAC enabled Disable remote UAC filtering
RustDesk does not connect Firewall blocking Open required ports

8. Is it suitable for a small business?

Yes

The combination of:

  • IDEAL ADMINISTRATION
  • RustDesk

is particularly suitable for:

  • Small businesses (SMBs)
  • Offices
  • Workshops
  • Networks with fewer than 50 computers
  • Serverless environments

9. Advantages in Workgroup

  • No server costs
  • Simple installation
  • No heavy infrastructure
  • Centralized administration despite no domain
  • Integrated remote control

10. Recommended best practices

  1. Create a dedicated local administrator account (e.g., AdminTech)
  2. Use a strong and identical password on all computers
  3. Enable automatic startup of the RustDesk service
  4. Configure a permanent password
  5. Test WMI before large-scale deployment
