How to use the RustDesk remote control tool in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION?

How can I remotely control a computer with RustDesk when it is located outside the local network?

I would like to remotely control a computer with RustDesk when it is located outside my company’s local network. What options are available with IDEAL ADMINISTRATION depending on whether RustDesk is already installed, whether I have administrator rights on the computer, or whether only the user can intervene?

➡️ How can I remotely control a computer with RustDesk when it is located outside the local network?

IDEAL ADMINISTRATION allows you to remotely control a computer with RustDesk even when it is outside the company’s local network, for example when working from home, on a remote site, or while travelling.

Three scenarios are possible depending on whether RustDesk has already been configured and on the level of access available on the remote computer.

1. RustDesk has already been installed and configured from the LAN using IDEAL ADMINISTRATION

This is the simplest case and the recommended configuration.

  • RustDesk has previously been installed and configured automatically by IDEAL ADMINISTRATION while the computer was accessible on the local network.
  • The computer’s RustDesk ID is already known by IDEAL ADMINISTRATION.
  • When the computer is outside the local network, simply use the following option in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION: “Remote Desktop \ RustDesk Remote Desktop \ Connection by ID”.

If a permanent RustDesk password has been configured, the remote control session can be started without any action from the remote user.

2. The computer is outside the network and an administrator can directly access it

In this case, RustDesk can be installed and configured directly on the remote computer.

  • Download the latest RustDesk version compatible with IDEAL ADMINISTRATION from the Pointdev website:
    https://download.pointdev.com/Zip/rustdesk-x86_64.msi
  • Install RustDesk on the computer.
  • Configure RustDesk to use the secure Pointdev server. The required server configuration information is provided by Pointdev only to customers with a licensed version of IDEAL ADMINISTRATION. It can be requested from support@pointdev.com.
  • If required, configure a permanent RustDesk password to allow future remote control sessions without requiring approval from the remote user.
  • Retrieve the computer’s RustDesk ID, then use the following option in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION: “Remote Desktop \ RustDesk Remote Desktop \ Connection by ID”.

3. The computer is outside the network and the remote user does not have administrator rights

This mode allows a one-time remote control session with the assistance of the remote user.

  • The user downloads RustDesk from the Pointdev website:
    https://download.pointdev.com/Zip/rustdesk-x86_64.msi
  • RustDesk is configured to use the secure Pointdev server. The server configuration information is provided only to customers with a licensed version of IDEAL ADMINISTRATION.
  • The user provides their RustDesk ID to the administrator.
  • The administrator starts the remote control session from IDEAL ADMINISTRATION using “Remote Desktop \ RustDesk Remote Desktop \ Connection by ID”.
  • The remote user manually approves the connection request on their computer.

In this last scenario, no permanent password is required. However, the remote user must be present at the computer to approve the connection.

In summary: if the computer was prepared beforehand from the LAN, connection by ID is immediate. If an administrator can access the computer, a full installation with a permanent password is possible. Finally, if only a standard user is available, remote access remains possible with manual approval from the user.
