How to manage printers and printer servers remotely?

How to troubleshoot the "Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server" message?

When i try to add remotely, through your software, a network printer on a computer, I receive the following error message : "Operation could not be completed. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server."

Therefore the Add Printer Wizard is not launched.

"Operation could not be completed. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." is a native message of Microsoft Windows Operating System and is not directly related to Pointdev software.

  • First, you should check if the "Print Spooler / Spooler" service is up and running on the remote computer.
  • If this is already the case, and if the computer runs Windows 2003 Server or higher OS, check in the Group Ploicy Editor if the print spooler accepts remote client connections. Follow these steps:
    • Start menu, Execute, "gpedit.msc"
    • Browse to "Computer Configuration" / "Administrative Templates" / "Printers".
    • In the right pane, double-clic on the policy"Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections".
    • Enable this setting, then Apply.
    • Then restart on the remote computer the "Print Spooler / Spooler" service in order to take changes into account.
