How to use the RustDesk remote control tool in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION?

Which RustDesk connection mode should be used in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION?

I want to use RustDesk with IDEAL ADMINISTRATION.

Should I use a local network connection, the public RustDesk server, the secure Pointdev RustDesk server, or a custom RustDesk server?

➡️ Which RustDesk connection mode should be used in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION?

IDEAL ADMINISTRATION allows you to use RustDesk with several connection modes, in order to adapt to different administration contexts: computers located on the same local network, remote users, branch offices, Internet connections, or a custom RustDesk infrastructure.

The choice of connection mode mainly depends on the location of the remote computer, the company’s security constraints, and the level of control required over the RustDesk infrastructure used.

➡️ RustDesk connection over the local network

A local network connection should be preferred when the administrator computer and the remote computer can communicate directly on the same company network.

This mode is particularly suitable for standard Active Directory environments, internal IT infrastructures, and support operations performed from within the company network.

Its main advantages are:

  • no dependency on an external RustDesk server for local connections
  • direct connection between the administrator computer and the client computer when the network allows it
  • better control over internal network traffic
  • suitable for environments where Internet access is restricted or filtered

This mode is recommended if all computers to be administered are located on the same local network, within a company VPN, or in an infrastructure where internal communications are allowed.

➡️ RustDesk connection by ID

A connection by RustDesk ID is useful when the remote computer cannot be reached directly using its local IP address.

This typically applies when:

  • the user is working from home
  • the computer is located on a remote site
  • the computer is behind an Internet box, a NAT router, or a firewall
  • the computer cannot be accessed directly through WMI, administrative shares, or an internal IP address

In this mode, RustDesk uses an ID server and, if required, a relay server to establish the connection between the administrator and the remote computer.

This is the mode to use for operations outside the local network, or when computers are not directly accessible from the company infrastructure.

➡️ Public RustDesk server

The public RustDesk server allows ID-based connections to be established quickly, without deploying a dedicated infrastructure.

This mode can be used for testing, quick validation, or environments that do not require a dedicated RustDesk server.

However, it has one important limitation: the company does not control the rendezvous infrastructure used to establish the connections.

This mode is therefore less suitable for organizations that want better control over their remote-control traffic.

➡️ Secure Pointdev RustDesk server

The secure Pointdev RustDesk server is recommended for customers using a licensed version of IDEAL ADMINISTRATION who want to use RustDesk over the Internet without depending on the public RustDesk server.

This mode provides better control over the infrastructure used for RustDesk connections, while keeping the configuration simple from within IDEAL ADMINISTRATION.

It is particularly suitable for the following needs:

  • remote control of computers over the Internet
  • support operations on teleworking or off-site computers
  • reduced dependency on public RustDesk servers
  • centralized configuration from IDEAL ADMINISTRATION
  • use of a better controlled RustDesk infrastructure

For most companies wishing to use RustDesk beyond the local network, the secure Pointdev RustDesk server is the most consistent choice.

➡️ Custom RustDesk server

The custom RustDesk server mode allows the organization to use its own RustDesk server.

This option is recommended for organizations that want full control over their remote-control infrastructure, especially in environments with strong security, sovereignty, hosting, or network-filtering requirements.

This mode may be relevant for:

  • large organizations
  • local authorities or public administrations
  • companies that already have their own RustDesk server infrastructure
  • environments where no third-party server must be used

In this case, the administrator enters the information for their own RustDesk server in IDEAL ADMINISTRATION: ID server, relay server, and RustDesk key.

➡️ Which mode should you choose according to your situation?

In practice, the choice can be summarized as follows:

  • computers on the same local network: prefer the RustDesk local network connection
  • teleworking or off-site computers: use the ID-based connection
  • licensed IDEAL ADMINISTRATION customers: use the secure Pointdev RustDesk server
  • organizations requiring full control: use a custom RustDesk server
  • quick tests or evaluation environments: use the public RustDesk server

The right choice is therefore to use the simplest possible mode while respecting the organization’s security constraints.

For a standard internal IT infrastructure, the local network connection is often sufficient. For remote computers or teleworking users, the secure Pointdev RustDesk server generally provides the best compromise between simplicity, security, and control over the infrastructure.
